Puppy Training Programs
Like our adult dog programs, our puppy programs are structured to provide you as little or as much help as you would like. Puppy training changes as your dog grows in maturity. In the early stages, proper socialization, home environment set-up, structure and play are the most important components.
As your puppy matures, training focuses shift to build commands, proofing those commands in other environments, generalization, and maintenance of those lessons. No one component is more important than the other. A poorly socialized puppy can turn into a poorly adjusted adult dog that is fearful of the world around them and unable to process information. A poorly trained but well socialized dog can be completely out of control.
Training starts from the moment you bring your puppy home, making puppy proofing and the setup of your home environment an essential first step. It is much easier to prevent bad decisions from being made than accidently reinforcing a puppy’s bad decision and trying to unravel it from there.
Example: a puppy picks up your $100 slipper, you yell, chase them around excitedly, making a big deal of getting the slipper back. The puppy learns the slipper is what makes the human play the chase me game - how fun! Maybe not for you though. Instead, our reaction can change. By picking up the slippers early on, we avoid that game with slippers all together, instead playing the same game with one of the puppy’s toys.
Like children, puppies are extremely impressionable and their first few months in their new homes can set the tone for the rest of their life.
**Puppy programs are for puppies ages 10 weeks to 6 months old at the start of their program
